Hello! 

My name is Caroline Wood Newhall. I am an Assistant Professor of History at Oberlin College in Ohio. I specialize in 19th-century United States history, focusing on North American slavery, warfare, and the Civil War Era. 

My forthcoming book, Every Thing but Death: How Black POWs Survived the Civil War (University of North Carolina Press, 2027), analyzes the experiences of Black Civil War soldiers who became prisoners of war in the Confederacy. 

In addition to the book, I am developing a digital database and mapping project centered on Black POWs’ movements throughout the American South.
